Protect Your Prostate: A Short Guide to Avoiding Prostatitis and Prostate Cancer

Chew on this: The World Cancer Research Fund reported that one in four men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the year 2018. Contemporary Urology reports that BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, afflicts fifty percent of men in their fifties and eighty percent of men in their eighties. Symptoms of BPH include frequent/weak urination, testicular pain and burning which can lead to bladder problems, kidney damage and incontinence. BPH can be caused by a bacterial infection, a STD, injury or a compromised immune system. Treatment is often in the form of strong drug therapy or surgery. Fortunately, there are some preventative measures you can take now to protect your prostate, that is unless you think you’re invincible and don’t mind a surgeon ripping out this gland when it’s too late.

Where the Hell is this Prostate Thingy?

The prostate is a walnut sized gland that lies between the bladder and the rectum right inside the t’aint location (it’aint your balls and it’aint your asshole).  It means ‘protector’ or ‘guardian’ in Greek and is responsible for producing seminal fluid to assist sperm in reaching its target location (hee, hee). When this little fucker becomes swollen, it can wreak all sorts of havoc already mentioned above. Cancer and BPH are usually not related, however by adjusting your diet and overall daily habits, you can strengthen your prostate which will hopefully stave off what has become one of the top five male related health challenges.

Go Easy on the Moo

As you slide into your thirties and forties, your body will start rebelling some of your normal, everyday food choices, namely dairy. Americans consume exorbitant amounts of cheese, milk and butter which some studies show can significantly add to prostate related disease. The reasoning is due to IGF (insulin-like growth factor) which is a hormone found in milk. The prostate has built in receptors that respond to IGF which has been linked to the formation of cancer cells.

Berry Good

The Saw Palmetto berry is a safe supplement that has been linked to inflammation reduction and cancer prevention of the prostate. It can be taken every day in capsule form but do check with your doctor just to be sure there are no contraindications regarding your personal history.  The African bark, pygeum, is often combined with Saw Palmetto for a one-two punch.

Use Your Bean You Nut

Beans are loaded with phytoestreogens which naturally protect the prostate. Eat fifteen milligrams (about one handful) per day along with the same amount of nuts or seeds. These benefits can also be found in supplemental form.

Eat Good Fat

Salmon, sardines, flaxseed, these all have cancer fighting omega3 fatty acids especially beneficial for prostate health.

Antioxidants

Increasing your fruits and vegetables as well as taking antioxidant supplements such as CoEnzyme Q10 will increase your cancer fighting capabilities. Protect your prostate and avoid what so many men are burdened with later in life. It can also mean the difference between staying hard or hardly staying.
